Mazed does storytelling with puppets, carved wooden puppets that capture the character of people from Cornwall’s folklore history whose own stories are as interesting as the tales they tell. Made by puppet master John Roberts of PuppetCraft, costumed by Sue Field, bought to life by Mazed storytellers.
BILL CHUBB
Liskeard’s very own droll teller, umbrella mender and knife grinder, Bill was Mazed poster boy. A rod puppet with a Chinese style wire body made by Jo Zia, Bill’s umbrella cart doubles as a stage for performing well loved tales like The Piskey Thresher. See Bill on the telly in Fred and Pete’s Treasure Tales, The Storyteller’s Hook.
NELLIE SLOGGETT/ENYS TREGARTHEN
Padstow maid, Nellie Sloggett is portrayed in a beautiful, unique dual marionette which shows the connection between folktales and literary tales. One way up she is folklorist Nellie Sloggett in her nightie: with a flip of the strings she becomes Enys Tregarthen, bestselling writer.
ROBERT HUNT AND WILLIAM BOTTRELL
Penzance schoolboys and tale collectors, Hunt and Bottrell are glove puppets, with their very own puppet show. Hunt also does ‘photography’ at local events with his very special camera, telling a tale whilst the picture develops.
THE PISKEY PATH
A puppet show with a suitcase stage which tells the stories of tale collectors Hunt and Bottrell and some of the tales they told. They travel Cornwall and the world meeting piskeys, spriggans, witches, giants, naughty pigs and flying sheep.
A special kind of magic.
For small audiences (up to 30) young and old.
No tech required, just a small quiet space
