Liskeard Storytelling Cafe

Liskeard Storytelling Cafe and ‘Strong Words’

In mid-2012, Liz Berg, an excellent storyteller who moved to Cornwall from South Wales, began a creative writing group in Liskeard. Finding that some of her friends were interested in oral storytelling, she formed the Liskeard Speakeasy, meeting in the Liskerrett Centre.

At the same time, ignorant of Liz’s plans, storytellers Mike O’Connor and Moe Keast saw the potential for a story club in Bodmin – they called it Strong Words. As the clubs disseminated their publicity material, they learned of each other and immediately agreed to be mutually supportive, consequently having a largely overlapping membership.

In 2015 Liskeard Speakeasy renamed itself Liskeard Storytelling Café, and in 2017 it moved its monthly meetings to Liskeard Public Rooms.

In 2020, with the Covid pandemic, both clubs went online. Sadly, at that time support in Bodmin faded. In August 2022, when physical meetings resumed, Liskeard recommenced monthly physical meetings, monthly online sessions and story walks.

Monthly meetings now take place in Liskeard Public Hall, 3-5 West St, Liskeard PL14 6BW. They are usually on the fourth Thursday of the month at 7.30 p.m.There is no meeting in August, and the Thursday can change to accommodate members’ commitments, so it’s always good to check the website at www.strongwords.org.uk. There is no membership fee, and admittance is by donation

Monthly online meetings are held on Zoom at 7.30 on the first Thursday of the month, the link can be had at www.strongwords.org.uk/events

Gentle story walks – more like story strolls – usually happen on the third Tuesday at 2 pm. The start and finish is usually somewhere that sells coffee and cake, and is advertised to a mailing list of club attendees.
